But I have another motive. Before you click on the cut please consider sponsoring Matthew Reeve. He is running the NYC Marathon in memory of his father to raise money for the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. Or you could just make a donation direct.

Still need convincing?

Your generous contribution will be put to immediate use supporting work that is changing people's lives every day, like:

The groundbreaking North American Clinical Trials Network, which is moving the most promising spinal cord therapies from the laboratory to the patient.
The NeuroRecovery Network, a group of rehabilitation centers that are pioneering activity-based therapies to help people improve their health, function, quality of life and independence and as a result, open new doors in their lives and careers.
Cutting-edge research projects and international workshops that are exploring exciting promising new strategies for repairing damaged spinal cords.
Quality of Life grants that are improving the lives of individuals and families living with paralysis.

Ultimately, the work that Christopher and Dana began 14 years ago depends on the enduring commitment of people like you. Only with your support can we help people with paralysis lead more active, healthier lives. Only with your help can we make Christopher's dream of curing spinal cord injuries a reality.

Christopher never stopped believing in that goal. I know that you won't either. Please join us in celebrating his birthday by making the one gift he would treasure most -- a tax-deductible donation to further the work of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.

Ok, now for the fun :)

Superman Returns The Bryan Singer Cut

  • Sep. 15th, 2009 at 10:39 PM
Bryan Singer
Superman Returns The Bryan Singer Cut I for one would love to see this. All those deleted scenes extra's on the DVD release was only some of the footage. Since Warner Bros have no plans currently for another movie I suspect those scenes will not be seen in any potential sequel either - so why not release the full cut - assuming Singer is happy to:

From last weekend 22-23rd August - it marked my first trip ever to Brighton when I went with Rach and [info]missy_manic. I had a great time and would visit Brighton again - someone give me an excuse to! This is my photo dump. But if you want to see a more organised one courtesy of [info]missy_manic then click here where you can see a pic of the Superman tattoo I got (temporary - too scared for a real one!). Below is just the best of.

Man if only these two could've worked together (in anything frankly). Ok so there are better "vs" fan vids out there but the actor crush appeal on this for me is high ;)

And if you haven't seen it yet, here's a great Brandon Routh vs Christopher Reeve or Superman/Superman Returns fan vid:

week roundup

Beyond The Sea
So Sunday I went to BBC to see filming of an episode of Miranda - new BBC sitcom comedy starring Miranda Hart. You may have seen her in Not Going Out or Hyperdrive, or the radio if your a radio listener. Really good fun. Sally Phillips is in the cast playing Miranda's annoying posh sister. :) Hope it does well when it airs as I like Hart a lot. The warm up audience guy on this was also hilarious.

[info]crapguitarist thank you for reminding me that Inherit The Wind tickets for the Old Vic were already on sale. I am so slacking :( I decided to take my mum who has never seen Spacey perform on stage before and will be going in November. The closest I could get seats to the stage is row J :( Its not just shallow reasons I want this, the closer I am the more I can lip read. However I've a feeling this play will involve lots of shouting so I should be fine ;) *excited* Can't wait to see Spacey again on stage - seems ages. Also [info]swankyfunk informs me that Jessica Hynes is back on stage in London - that is very tempting also.

Myself and [info]missy_manic are nearly finished with watching Star Trek TOS Season 2. Just watched the episode Bread and Circuses (do I like those grey tshirts on Kirk, Spock and McCoy? Heck yes.) One more ep to go!

Comics - just finished reading part 1 of Superman For Tomorrow. Absolutely brilliant writing and story art. I will comment more on this another time, plus I need to buy part 2 and finish it.

And the other big news... Rachel's got a job in Glasgow! This is great for her - what she has been aiming to do for since Spring so I am thrilled for her. But it means I will lose a good friend as a great flatmate, so will be flatmate hunting come October. We shall be having a massive 30th birthday/send off for her early October - should be fun :D

And tomorrow I am going with [info]missy_manic and Rach to Brighton for the weekend. Believe it or not. I have never been - this will be my first visit!

Superman Meme - Micro Moments

  • Aug. 13th, 2009 at 10:43 PM
Yellow, Superman Returns
You can ask any civilian on the street about Superman and they can tell you their favorite moment. "I like when he caught her and the helocopter." or "The first flight together was so romantic." or "I like when he shot him in the eyeball."

But I think we as Superman fans look a little deeper. We see those small moments, they extra layers, the richer textures of the Superman movies and we appreciate them.

This meme is to show some pure fan love for any Superman film. A bit of a respite from the 'discussion' and just saying what we loved. Little tiny moments be they plot points of actor delivery that may get lost within the grandeur of the films as a whole.

So pick any Superman movie - Smallville too if you are so inclined and comment to this entry. So we can have them all in one place. I know I'd love to see what YOU see what you delve into a Superman movie. Add yours to this Library of awesome.

So long holiday

Spock Chair - Star Trek TOS
Back to work tomorrow. Boo! But have had a nice relaxing holiday. On Thursday after going to the cinema went to Forbidden Planet and had to restrain myself - there are some awesome Star Trek TOS action figures in stock. Instead I came out with graphic novels of Superman, The Boys, and Star Trek. Yesterday I met up with Lorraine for coffee and a chat. She is really annoyed that itv have lost the rights to the next season of Supernatural as she is a massive fan. She doesn't have internet access at home so is reliant on the TV networks to watch.

Leonard Nimoy's autobiography I am Spock is a great read. I'd recommend it for anyone who is a fan of the character or Nimoy himself. There's some nice insight into Nimoy's creative processes, and his love for the character of Spock is obvious. The memo's written between him and Desilu - Star Trek's production company regards expenses relating to replying to fan mail and fan clubs is one the funniest spats I've read. In the same way that I wish I'd been old enough to see Christopher Reeve perform on stage, the same is true for Nimoy. Having read both autobiographies they seem to have a similar approach to their creative work in acting and directing. Also thanks to [info]majestic_shriek I managed to get a copy of Nimoy's Baffled to watch in all of its 1970s glory :)

I forgot to mention in my last post Ice Age 3 totally has a Superman reference in it which was totally unexpected. At one point Manny says 'I'll raise them by myself...In my fortress of solitude....in ice...alone!" Hmmm... that sounds a familiar place ;) Anyway onto things. I finished watching the film and the DVD commentary for Kid Monk Baroni. I loved this movie mainly because of fandom cross-over squee:

Photobucket

So young and pretty! Jack Larson aka Jimmy Olson in The Adventures of Superman (not to mention also an episode of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and more recently Superman Returns) And Leonard Nimoy aka Spock in Star Trek (to list all the movies, series takes too long!). Actually watching a young Nimoy at times made me think of Zachary Quinto although its so Nimoy's voice - you can't escape it - instantly recognisable. You wouldn't know if from the above photo but Larson and Nimoy actually play best friends in the movie. It's a cute story - I won't go into the details - you can read more here. They both provide a commentary for the DVD together (recorded in 2006) and it is well worth a listen to hear them talk. This movie was shot shortly before the first season of The Adventures of Superman which would make Larson a household name and was Nimoy's first lead role after moving to Hollywood. So they share the connection of this movie feeling like their big break at the time. It's interesting listening to them compare experiences in movie and TV in the 50s and the studio system (this seriously made me crave my American Studies degree as did the movie itself), the issues of being typecast, the wider issues going on at the time...yep craving my American Studies now. Also, cute dialogue at times such as (am paraphrasing here):

Nimoy: Look at us. We were just kids.
Larson: Yeah. Your a good leading man. I was never sexy enough.
Nimoy: What?! Whoever told you you weren't sexy was BLIND!
Larson: I became the best square for hire though. I was the cute guy to hire for that.

*laughter*

and in reference to this scene:

Nimoy: Oh here she is Mona! Hot!
Larson: Oh yeah, beautiful.
Nimoy: Yeah. Perfectly cast this movie *laughs*

There's more but some of it I struggled to follow without subtitles. Worth the struggle though!

Also on impulse I bought A3 sized black card thinking I could stick a collage together of my extra Superman Returns trading cards that I have to make a collage. Whether I get round to doing this I don't know. I'm not the most artistic of types but can't think what else to do with them.... In the same shop (WHSmith) I noticed that volume 4 The Boys graphic novel is out. Must get that. Not sure if WHSmith should be placing that comic next to the likes of G.I. Joe movie graphic novel. Do they even check the comic book content before placing on the shelf? I suspect not. It's not a comic to buy kids for Christmas people! Unless you want to give them an education on adult content...

Talking of which I was not offended but I was definitely shocked at just how close to the knuckle George Takei's comments are when watching William Shatner's Roast. It's the nature of the show to insult but o_0 ! NSFW at all. Shatner and Nimoy on the telephone though = love.

Also *waves* to all new friends from Star Trek friending meme.

Comic Con continued....

  • Jul. 26th, 2009 at 10:35 PM
Donna, Doctor Who
Oh, ok so there was no big announcement, just preview clips of Tennant's last episodes of Doctor Who (Noooooo! don't go!....) that included the announcement of the return of you know who enemy of the Doctor (unless you've been even better than I have at avoiding spoilers, and I've been pretty damn good).

They talk a little about the last episode; and about showing it to the composer and how, halfway through the second episode, he started shaking and sobbing. Tissues, they warn, will be necessary.

Oh god. Its gonna be HORRIBLE!

From Panel write up here.

Also the Smallville panel - so they are going break their own rule by showing the tights this season? Though the descriptions sound more Matrix than Superman..... Yay! for Tom Welling finally appearing at a Con! And Johns writing an episode - that I would watch (though I am soooo far behind the seasons I don't think I'll ever catch up).

Comic Con tidbits

due South, Fraser
So, as usual Comic Con brings some exciting tidbits of info.

I cannot wait for Star Trek XI DVD. That preview got me way too excited. :D

Like the teaser poster but really want to see a trailer for Dead of Night (based on Dylan Dog comics).

Paul Gross has been at Comic Con for The Witches of Eastwick TV series (which I would love to say excites me, but I'm not sold at the moment). Gross fans - is his shirt really that bad?! I don't think it is (maybe I should be worried about my own fashion sense ;)

Also, General? Would you care to step outside? These Mattel figures of Superman and General Zod - I WANT THEM.

ETA: You've probably seen this by now but fangirls will be happy with Tennant/Barrowman especially:

Am more interested in what this 'special announcement at another panel.... *is curious*

Wasn't sure if we would make it but thankfully [info]missy_manic felt well enough after hospital visit to go to London Film and Comic Con. I really hope that she does not have a repeat experience of what happened last time for her own sake and me as paranoid/caring friend spent today making sure she was ok hopefully without being too obvious about (will be if she reads this LOL). Was nice to bump into you [info]justtracy :)

Christopher Reeve autographs )

^ Pretty pricey. That said autographs without a memory don't have much appeal to me. I got to be in the same room as the guy before he passed away, that's a priceless memory :D

Today is also one of the last days before my cousin Juliet leaves for New Zealand - possibly for the long run. Whilst we usually only meet for family occasions I still wish her all the best and hope to see her soon. And i hope my mum was able to give her my card today. I will call and find out tomorrow.

Just to say...

...been a bit crap on the old f-list the last few days. Hope all is well.

Many things to share - Take That concert was superb and [info]missy_manic, Rach and Lorraine got some great photos and videos which I shall bore people with another time. Well worth waiting hours to get a good spot in the stadium. ([info]redderz - support act was Gary Go and The Script).

Went to cinema - saw Public Enemies - good movie.

Also, Torchwood - enjoying it so far, loving the epic-ness of the story and the comedy moments :)

The news about Brandon Routh's contract to Superman expiring makes me sad but glad he said he'd return if asked (if nothing is announced at comic con this month I cannot see a new movie happening anytime soon with or without him), and the Microsoft commercial with Dean Cain - just makes me cringe. :-/

Star Trek meetups and fandom

  • Jun. 18th, 2009 at 10:57 PM
Kirk & Spock - Star Trek TOS
So the second London [info]ontd_startrek was awesome - look how many of us attended! \O/ woot! It was great to meet everyone even if I didn't get the chance to talk to all of you. I was glad to see those of you who attend the first one with me, came to this as well :D

There is another meetup planned for Saturday. I shall be there :)

Meetups aside, Star Trek TOS S1 is continuing to be awesome. Some of the later eps in S1 have some brilliant sci-fi stories. Myself and [info]missy_manic find ourselves wanting to get hold of WIlliam Shatner and Leonard Nimoy's other work. I really want to get a copy of Deathwatch starring Nimoy - because is this not the worst intriguing tagline you've ever heard of for a movie:

Homosexual outlaws on a rampage!
... WTF?! this is the tagline on IMDb I kid you not.

And fandom crossover squee means I must get a copy of Kid Monk Baroni as it stars Jack "Jimmy Olson" Larson (from 1950s Adventures of Superman playing the best friend of Leonard Nimoy. Look how young he is! awww....

Also Quinto Spock is making we want to watch Heroes S1 again which is great TV. It lost me in S2 though :(

Star Trek TOS
Yeah so they made the best they could out of the new MK Dons venue but this is England and its not always warm so it meant that the balcony that was open to the air where the football pitch was *COLD* This is such a shame because normally I like to chill out and watch the cosplayers and general goings on but it was so cold I just had to keep moving along all the time. I felt a bit sorry for the VIPs - I hope they were warm/comfortable enough signing autographs all day! I noticed Marc McClure took to wearing a wooly hat to keep warm (kinda cute actually) - who can blame him. Leonard Nimoy must be one tough cookie to tough that out. I was kinda hoping I'd get a glance just to gawp stare in awe and watch the fans get their autographs but all the VIPs were in kind of mini tents so you couldn't see them unless you were up close in the queue. To be fair this might actually make it better for those that are paying to go up and get autographs.

The one part of the building that was completely indoors is where they set up all the stalls. Warmer so better (but when it got really busy it was HOT! (especially when your wearing a jumper cos the balcony areas were cold thanks to crappy British weather) Why hire a bigger capacity venue if your gonna cram all the stalls in an area that wasn't that much bigger to the original MK Centre venue?! That's my biggest gripe. It got really busy at lunchtime and it was a struggle to get to some of the stalls for sheer crowds. Kinda a victim of its own success. I think the event organisers utilised the space they had well but next year if the weather is cold they need to do think of an alternative somehow.

I was annoyed with myself for forgetting to bring my Superman DVD box tin for Marc McClure to sign so in the end I chose not to go to his stall. I did however get a kick out of the fact that the first thing I saw on arrival was a Star Wars stall that had a Falcon mural where you could take a photo of yourself "on the ship." I did a double take as I walked past because who was the geek getting his own photo taken in front of it - yep McClure! I don't know why but I got a kick out of that :)

Best costumes I saw included a Batman and Joker walking around, Rosarch, and The Doctor and Marty McFly :)

I bought some Star Trek stuff and one Doctor Who photo. Nothing major - I really wanted a red shirt Star Fleet academy tshirt but they'd sold out of all sizes except XXL. Instead I opted for a Spock Live Long & Prosper shirt.

Trek and stuff

Yellow, Superman Returns
Have failed greatly at photo a day at least 1 day a week lately - I keep forgetting and subsequently take a photo of something random in the flat that doesn't really reflect the day at hand. Will try harder. I Woke up this morning with a whopper of a headache, like an awful hangover except I've not drank a thing. It went away after a caffeine fix with coffee but then came back again even worse. Took an aspirin and 3 hours later I feel better. This is good because I want to drink the wine I bought whilst watching trashy Eurovision tonight. Am hoping there will be some hilarious literal-translations on the subtitles that make no sense whatsoever. :P

Something I failed to mention - earlier this week I went to see Star Trek again with [info]missy_manic (2 for 1 Wednesday cinema ticket too tempting) and the movie is still really rather awesome. There is a pattern developing in my love of fictional characters - I can't resist an alien who has lost his home planet - Superman, The Doctor, Spock.... yep definitely a pattern going on there. ;) Trek Who <-- cracked me up. (Especially the last bit).

Also I found out yesterday Mark 'Jimmy Olsen' McClure is going to be @ Collectormania 15. I should go and get his autograph to go with my Margot Kidder one on my Superman DVD Tin right? (Philip Glenister and Leonard Nimoy are also there but I don't think I could cope with queue's for that. Surely Nimoy's will be *insane* )
