Scotty - Star Trek XI
thanks to all [info]londongqmfs who came to the blu-ray screening. Whether you came for the movie or came for the extra's or you lasted the full eight hours of all of it you rock! It was fun :) Lets do another one soon I hope. Given the hilarity of watching Star Trek TOS episode Spock's Brain in the interval maybe we should have a TOS screening some time.

Back to Star Trek XI though - the extras on the blu-ray are great. I think we all agreed we had no idea so many of the locations were real buildings as opposed to sets. Beer plant for the engine room for example. And the 'Vulcan' council building looks amazing. Want to visit it! I was hoping Shatner might actually be on the Shatner Conundrum feature but no :( My only gripe is that the writers did not explain the idea they did have for including ShatnerKirk. It wasn't used and it was probably the right decision but having read about it online I hoped that detail at least might be on the DVD to cover it has part of the films history just as the deleted scenes are for example. I cannot wait for the sequel - all the cast deserve to contribute some more to their individual roles.

Trailer:

Just in case some people still haven't seen this.... THERE ARE SPOILERS FOR THIS MOVIE BELOW.

Saw this @ the bfi with fellow [info]londongqmfs. Was great :D Oh, and rather ramdom but who was sat being myself and [info]missy_manic for the screening - David Wailliams (one half of Little Britain) . I applaud his taste :) This was great on the big screen. I have a memory of seeing this as a child on TV - my first introduction to Star Trek that I can remember and being upset by the ending! I think it was one of the first films of my childhood I watched that did not have a Hollywood-type ending of everything is alright at the end. Ok, ok so the lingering last shot of Spock's coffin on a planet that creates life suggests its not the end of Spock - but that was far to subtle a clue for my seven year old brain to understand. ;) Now I love it for its themes of growing old, friendship, life, and death. It so much better than the first movie. And without it we'd never have III and IV which are probably my favourites. I can never decide.

Favourite quote: Spock: If I may be so bold, it was a mistake for you to accept promotion. Commanding a starship is your first, best destiny; anything else is a waste of material.
Kirk: I would not presume to debate you.
Spock: That is wise. Were I to invoke logic, however, logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
Kirk: Or the one.
Spock: You are my superior officer. You are also my friend. I have been and always shall be yours.

Thanks all who responded to my original post. From now on all updates will be posted here. Please consider joining [info]londongqmfs where I will post notification of updates to this master post when needed (plus details of other meetups in London :D )

For those that do not know Wood Green is in zone 3. It can be reached on the Piccadilly Line or bus number 29 from central London, or Alexandra Palace Station is a 10 min walk/2 min bus ride away. If you are arriving by car, there are spaces to park but none are free - you will have to pay and it is probably pricey (I wouldn't know I don't drive). If you plan to drive here let me know and I can find out if need be.

Because I'm slightly anal and Spock-like I've put two start times for you all to decide when you want to arrive - you can of course attend both.

Note: Please arrive BEFORE the start times listed - myself and [info]missy_manic will be ready from 12pm onwards. If this sounds bossy I apologise but no one wants the door buzzer ringing when screening[s] has started right? And now that I've been bossy I gonna ask for your help! There will be some nibbles and drinks available but we would love it if you guys could help - bring food, drinks, anything to help make it a GQMF party atmosphere right? Got an idea? Share it in the comments! etc etc.

Have I missed anything out? Or if you have questions just ask.

UPDATE AS OF 14/11/09:

Is the attendance below correct? those that are TBC can you confirm?
ALL - If you have not received the address by end of Wednesday 18th November it is because you have not confirmed attendance. Check your LJ inbox for a PM otherwise :)

The following people have kindly volunteered to bring food and/or drink - if you know what you are bringing can you comment and I'll add the info - just thought it might help to see what the combo is like etc. If you know what you are bringing please comment so I can update. :) Yes you can bring booze if you want to drink it.

NOTE:: This is not a Kobayashi Maru test that you will be held to account over with regards to comments you have made about bringing food or drink - obviously it will help for the party atmosphere and feeding of stomachs but if you can't contribute you can't and if you can - yay! Yes there are many takeaways nearby if people want to go with that option.

[info]ms_treesap Updated 14//11/09 is bringing: Indian sweetmeats (sadly not homemade, there's a shop up the road), and/or juice. As well as some action figures :).
[info]placebobitch Updated 17/11/09 is bringing: I'm going to make a cake of some sort and bring some snacks and WKDromulan ale :D
[info]chuckney Updated 15/11/09 is bringing: still on for bringing some food, as well. :)
[info]mwmm23 'I'll try to bring something too. :D'
[info]infernalbad ' i'll bring a bunch of foodz too :)'
[info]lady__ishtar Updated 15/11/09 is bringing: will hopefully be bringing some Trek-themed biscuits if I get some baking time this week.
[info]sakuraso 'I shall try and help out with drinkage and foodage... '
[info]audiograms Updated 15/11/09: I'll get a few platters and maybe an oven pizza or two. Definitely platters though.
[info]soomka Updated 16/11/09 is bringing I'll pop in Sainsbury's on the way and buy some snacky type foods :)

Other ways to help with the party atmosphere - bring your Trek related gear and we'll fill the lounge with it for the afternoon - costume? action figures? etc

and on that note I shall simply say FIRE EVERYTHING!

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Trailer:

Met some lovely people from [info]ontd_startrek for a meet up on Saturday to watch an original cinema print of Star Trek: The Motion Picture @ bfi. Fun times chatting, playing with action figures and then going to see the film - for me for the first time. This has been called Star Trek: The Motionless Picture by fans and so I wasn't sure what to expect. And LOL good god man some of the shots go on forever! Too much 2001 Space Odyssey influence? On the other hand in the context of its original release seeing the enterprise ship jump from a small tv screen to the cinema screen must have been an exciting thing. The best bits were of course Spock/Kirk/McCoy moments and I do like that in the same way as Star Trek IV -this movie does not have a 'typical villian' for want of a better expression. Next month the bfi are showing Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. I shall be there :)
Edgar Wright
Tonight I have officially finished watching every single episode of Star Trek TOS. So much fun. Looking forward to meet up tomorrow @ bfi for Star Trek: The Motion Picture - then I will have also completed viewing all Star Trek movies (original cast).

And damn you Edgar Wright, if anyone could sell me horror (I'm not really a big fan) it's probably Wright and his enthusiasm for it. Stop planning Prince Charles Cinema screenings on days I cannot make :( (Ok so I made it to Grindhouse, but was gutted to miss Hot Fuzz).

Oh, and the reviews for Inherit the Wind at the Old Vic are mostly positive - I cannot wait :D Hurry up November. I've missed seeing Spacey on stage.

Star Trek TOS
Had the weirdest saturday night out in a while. Went out to celebrate Lorraine's mate Vicki's birthday. Started off fine with food and cocktails. Then went to club we were on the guest list - it was heaving in all the rooms. Got a jug of Long Island Iced Tea cocktail to share, bopped to the 70s music, all was fine. Decided to investigate another room in the club - it was dark, packed, and hot - and that's when Vicki bless her gave us about a 2 second warning that she didn't feel well and fainted. She came round pretty quick but it was a bit worrying so we played it safe and decided to leave. We were only there for a bout 15 mintues and that includes the time spent queuing at the cloakroom!

Getting out into the fresh air seemed to do the trick so we decided to find a less crowded club because frankly it really was too packed in the one we'd just escaped (and call me old fashioned but what is the point in being in a club if there is literally no room to dance without elbowing each other). And we did find another club - except this one was the complete opposite. At 11pm - four of us were the only one's there. Excellent, no queue for the bar then! The contrast was just hysterical. The DJ told us he didn't take requests and was on till 2am after which we could request a song... right, except there's only four of us.... ok! It didn't matter in the end as some decent tunes were played and so we ended up having a great time :) I have kept the clubs nameless because frankly I quite liked having the empty club - I don't want people discovering it now :P They are both in W1. That is all I'm saying.

Flatmate Rachel is back from her holiday in Spain... I can't believe she leaves on Saturday - after nearly 4 years :( I don't think it will sink in till after her birthday/leaving do in a couple of a weeks. Any geeks in London want to flatshare with two other female geeks? Talking of which....

Star Trek - I have now watched Star Trek V - the campfire scenes are definitely the best for Kirk/McCoy/Spock friendship :) And I am well into Star Trek TOS: Season 3. Me and [info]missy_manic loved The Tholian Web for Spock/McCoy tension but found floating Captain Kirk hysterical. And OMG I cannot even compute what I have just seen in Plato's Stepchildren - both hysterical and dark.

And if Empire are right and this movie turns out to be a "US Hot Fuzz" with Michael Keaton in the cast of a comedy you can colour me excited.

On semi-related noted - not Keaton's version but I did watch Adam West's Batman Movie at the weekend which was of its time really - it makes such an interesting contrast to the movies that followed it!

week roundup

Beyond The Sea
So Sunday I went to BBC to see filming of an episode of Miranda - new BBC sitcom comedy starring Miranda Hart. You may have seen her in Not Going Out or Hyperdrive, or the radio if your a radio listener. Really good fun. Sally Phillips is in the cast playing Miranda's annoying posh sister. :) Hope it does well when it airs as I like Hart a lot. The warm up audience guy on this was also hilarious.

[info]crapguitarist thank you for reminding me that Inherit The Wind tickets for the Old Vic were already on sale. I am so slacking :( I decided to take my mum who has never seen Spacey perform on stage before and will be going in November. The closest I could get seats to the stage is row J :( Its not just shallow reasons I want this, the closer I am the more I can lip read. However I've a feeling this play will involve lots of shouting so I should be fine ;) *excited* Can't wait to see Spacey again on stage - seems ages. Also [info]swankyfunk informs me that Jessica Hynes is back on stage in London - that is very tempting also.

Myself and [info]missy_manic are nearly finished with watching Star Trek TOS Season 2. Just watched the episode Bread and Circuses (do I like those grey tshirts on Kirk, Spock and McCoy? Heck yes.) One more ep to go!

Comics - just finished reading part 1 of Superman For Tomorrow. Absolutely brilliant writing and story art. I will comment more on this another time, plus I need to buy part 2 and finish it.

And the other big news... Rachel's got a job in Glasgow! This is great for her - what she has been aiming to do for since Spring so I am thrilled for her. But it means I will lose a good friend as a great flatmate, so will be flatmate hunting come October. We shall be having a massive 30th birthday/send off for her early October - should be fun :D

And tomorrow I am going with [info]missy_manic and Rach to Brighton for the weekend. Believe it or not. I have never been - this will be my first visit!

Nimoy to Shatner "Id like for us to sit down and watch the movie together. Chris Pine honors you in this movie." 51 minutes ago

^ Yes, Shatner take up that offer.

Nimoy razzing Shat for not seeing Star Trek. Bill call nimoy a "whore" for JJ abrams for doing Fringe and not Boston Legal 57 minutes ago

Also, Spock x 3! Brilliant :)

Hoping there will be a summary of what was said by Quinto, Shatner and Nimoy later :)

Spock Chair - Star Trek TOS
Back to work tomorrow. Boo! But have had a nice relaxing holiday. On Thursday after going to the cinema went to Forbidden Planet and had to restrain myself - there are some awesome Star Trek TOS action figures in stock. Instead I came out with graphic novels of Superman, The Boys, and Star Trek. Yesterday I met up with Lorraine for coffee and a chat. She is really annoyed that itv have lost the rights to the next season of Supernatural as she is a massive fan. She doesn't have internet access at home so is reliant on the TV networks to watch.

Leonard Nimoy's autobiography I am Spock is a great read. I'd recommend it for anyone who is a fan of the character or Nimoy himself. There's some nice insight into Nimoy's creative processes, and his love for the character of Spock is obvious. The memo's written between him and Desilu - Star Trek's production company regards expenses relating to replying to fan mail and fan clubs is one the funniest spats I've read. In the same way that I wish I'd been old enough to see Christopher Reeve perform on stage, the same is true for Nimoy. Having read both autobiographies they seem to have a similar approach to their creative work in acting and directing. Also thanks to [info]majestic_shriek I managed to get a copy of Nimoy's Baffled to watch in all of its 1970s glory :)

I forgot to mention in my last post Ice Age 3 totally has a Superman reference in it which was totally unexpected. At one point Manny says 'I'll raise them by myself...In my fortress of solitude....in ice...alone!" Hmmm... that sounds a familiar place ;) Anyway onto things. I finished watching the film and the DVD commentary for Kid Monk Baroni. I loved this movie mainly because of fandom cross-over squee:

Photobucket

So young and pretty! Jack Larson aka Jimmy Olson in The Adventures of Superman (not to mention also an episode of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and more recently Superman Returns) And Leonard Nimoy aka Spock in Star Trek (to list all the movies, series takes too long!). Actually watching a young Nimoy at times made me think of Zachary Quinto although its so Nimoy's voice - you can't escape it - instantly recognisable. You wouldn't know if from the above photo but Larson and Nimoy actually play best friends in the movie. It's a cute story - I won't go into the details - you can read more here. They both provide a commentary for the DVD together (recorded in 2006) and it is well worth a listen to hear them talk. This movie was shot shortly before the first season of The Adventures of Superman which would make Larson a household name and was Nimoy's first lead role after moving to Hollywood. So they share the connection of this movie feeling like their big break at the time. It's interesting listening to them compare experiences in movie and TV in the 50s and the studio system (this seriously made me crave my American Studies degree as did the movie itself), the issues of being typecast, the wider issues going on at the time...yep craving my American Studies now. Also, cute dialogue at times such as (am paraphrasing here):

Nimoy: Look at us. We were just kids.
Larson: Yeah. Your a good leading man. I was never sexy enough.
Nimoy: What?! Whoever told you you weren't sexy was BLIND!
Larson: I became the best square for hire though. I was the cute guy to hire for that.

*laughter*

and in reference to this scene:

Nimoy: Oh here she is Mona! Hot!
Larson: Oh yeah, beautiful.
Nimoy: Yeah. Perfectly cast this movie *laughs*

There's more but some of it I struggled to follow without subtitles. Worth the struggle though!

Why the hell am I still up at 2am? Well you can blame my not so good coding skills for that. In trying to get my new LJ header up. I am quite proud of it though. After a long time with a Superman theme, I've changed it to Star Trek - [info]dj_intheuk <--- please look. It's a XII/TOS combo. If anyone can think of a good LJ title to go with it - please comment. It needs to be short - if it goes to two lines my image is covered and I'm NOT resizing it *again* Changed my f-list title to for the first time ever I think but it was so easy to theme it...

Comments even if it is criticism = love.

And don't worry, Superman and other fandoms are very much still alive for those on my flist who aren't into it.

Also on impulse I bought A3 sized black card thinking I could stick a collage together of my extra Superman Returns trading cards that I have to make a collage. Whether I get round to doing this I don't know. I'm not the most artistic of types but can't think what else to do with them.... In the same shop (WHSmith) I noticed that volume 4 The Boys graphic novel is out. Must get that. Not sure if WHSmith should be placing that comic next to the likes of G.I. Joe movie graphic novel. Do they even check the comic book content before placing on the shelf? I suspect not. It's not a comic to buy kids for Christmas people! Unless you want to give them an education on adult content...

Talking of which I was not offended but I was definitely shocked at just how close to the knuckle George Takei's comments are when watching William Shatner's Roast. It's the nature of the show to insult but o_0 ! NSFW at all. Shatner and Nimoy on the telephone though = love.
