Edward Woodward (1930 – 2009) : Edgar Wright Here

What a lovely tribute from Mr Wright. I was saddened to hear this news today - I will always giggle at his name because of his great comic performance in Hot Fuzz complaining about extremely irritating living statues, and hoodies, loitering about.

It only seems like yesterday that he was guest starring in EastEnders also.... :(

Last weekend, went home to see the parents for first time in ages. It was nice and I made them watch my latest blu-ray buy - The Damned United with the amazing morph-like ability that is Michael Sheen. They liked it. Also watched again Recount. This is a great great movie - a favourite of mine of Kevin Spacey's in a while. The whole cast are great and there's a lot of big names in it. Watch this movie. It makes politics interesting and if you don't care about the issues in this movie, I don't think I want to know you. That is all.

Oh, except Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead are now available on blu-ray :D :D These will most likely be my next purchases. I feel there should be a blu-ray party for these. Will see how the Star Trek one goes next month... :)

That's... in the country

Damn you Wells, Somerset why didn't you advertise it earlier so I could have an excuse to visit Sandford again. [info]redderz and [info]fearcat - did you know about this "Night on the Town" on 23rd September?

Weekend and fandom catch up

Star Trek TOS
Had the weirdest saturday night out in a while. Went out to celebrate Lorraine's mate Vicki's birthday. Started off fine with food and cocktails. Then went to club we were on the guest list - it was heaving in all the rooms. Got a jug of Long Island Iced Tea cocktail to share, bopped to the 70s music, all was fine. Decided to investigate another room in the club - it was dark, packed, and hot - and that's when Vicki bless her gave us about a 2 second warning that she didn't feel well and fainted. She came round pretty quick but it was a bit worrying so we played it safe and decided to leave. We were only there for a bout 15 mintues and that includes the time spent queuing at the cloakroom!

Getting out into the fresh air seemed to do the trick so we decided to find a less crowded club because frankly it really was too packed in the one we'd just escaped (and call me old fashioned but what is the point in being in a club if there is literally no room to dance without elbowing each other). And we did find another club - except this one was the complete opposite. At 11pm - four of us were the only one's there. Excellent, no queue for the bar then! The contrast was just hysterical. The DJ told us he didn't take requests and was on till 2am after which we could request a song... right, except there's only four of us.... ok! It didn't matter in the end as some decent tunes were played and so we ended up having a great time :) I have kept the clubs nameless because frankly I quite liked having the empty club - I don't want people discovering it now :P They are both in W1. That is all I'm saying.

Flatmate Rachel is back from her holiday in Spain... I can't believe she leaves on Saturday - after nearly 4 years :( I don't think it will sink in till after her birthday/leaving do in a couple of a weeks. Any geeks in London want to flatshare with two other female geeks? Talking of which....

Star Trek - I have now watched Star Trek V - the campfire scenes are definitely the best for Kirk/McCoy/Spock friendship :) And I am well into Star Trek TOS: Season 3. Me and [info]missy_manic loved The Tholian Web for Spock/McCoy tension but found floating Captain Kirk hysterical. And OMG I cannot even compute what I have just seen in Plato's Stepchildren - both hysterical and dark.

And if Empire are right and this movie turns out to be a "US Hot Fuzz" with Michael Keaton in the cast of a comedy you can colour me excited.

On semi-related noted - not Keaton's version but I did watch Adam West's Batman Movie at the weekend which was of its time really - it makes such an interesting contrast to the movies that followed it!

*I have no idea why the Timothy Dalton connection mentioned in the article amuses me other than Hot Fuzz's Skinner. ;)

Ashes to Ashes

Spandau Ballet
Caught up with the last 3 eps in time to watch the final ep of series 2 tonight. I think this series has been stronger than series 1. I can't help but think of Hot Fuzz sometimes - especially - the ep with the Neighborhood Watch Alliance - Gene Hunt's advice!! Genius. Also, Alex's correction of police woman to police officer being a woman has nothing to do with it.

I was surprised to hear Glennister announce on BBC News this morning that there will be a third series of Ashes to Ashes - glad though that we will see more of Gene Hunt - I think the writers have tried to keep the character moving forward so look forward to finding out more in series 3 - I know there are a lot of theories out there already about who he is.

Also I meant to post that the final episode of er - made me happy - it was brilliant and not sentimental one bit. As it should be. I can't quite believe it has finally finished.

For this day I give huge thanks to [info]swankyfunk for acting as a guide for me and Phil and taking us to some rather awesome places to spend our money and eat-a-plenty. This was so much fun :D Hot Fuzz fans reading - might want to skip to NYPD museum pics for amusement - I guess potentially this might count as Pegg Pavement? It's not a filming location but I to believe there was some publicity for the movie here as part of Fuzzball Rally? (I need to watch the DVD extras again).

First stop was Midtown Comics. [info]swankyfunk kindly bought me an Obama comic book ([info]nealbailey - was hoping to get the Palin one you've worked on but it wasn't on the shelves yet?) and Superman vs Lex magnet in return for my gift of goodies. Next up was Union Square Market? (hope I've remembered that correctly), followed by Forbidden Planet store. I couldn't resist buying a Superman Returns diorama bust - I got the Clark Kent shirt rip one - yay! Plus my excuse was that I've not seen them stocked in the UK to buy. And then just across the road was an awesome restaurant Max Brenner: Chocolate By The Bald Man - a menu of everything with chocolate - very yummy - ate too much, loved it.

With a full stomach we visited Toy Tokyo - a cute little store packed full of Japanese imports - great to look around and browse. I bought a great Obama figure here as a silly present for my flatmates. Also on the way I was pleased to discover that the theatre I visited back in 1997 on my first trip to NYC to see Stomp, is still showing Stomp :) Made me all nostalgic. I liked the show so much I've seen it several times since in various locations :) Phil whilst in this are bought a new hat from one of the market stalls and haggled with the price - good for him.

This was followed by a trip to the NYC Police Museum. [info]swankyfunk bought a Saxon dog plushie from the gift store - see photos for more fun stuff. Next was a trip on the Staten Island Ferry *cue Carly Simon music from Working Girl* ;) I've been wanting to do this for ages so this was another highlight for me. Got some fantastic photos thanks to [info]swankyfunk's knowledge of where to stand on the deck to get the best views. After the trip back we walked around downtown city area before eventually finishing the day at Shake Shack - Best comfort food ever! And I do agree that its totally indirectly referenced in The Boys comic book :) If I could I would do this day all over again :D

March 21st 2009 - NYC Day 4 )

Next up, SOMEBODY CALL THE POLICE!!! ahem, a trip to the NYPD museum in honour of Fuzzball rally! (and on a more serious note the NYPD themselves - there was a moving exhibition on efforts on and following 9-11)

Next... Phil, [info]swankyfunk, and [info]dj_intheuk present...

We travelled back uptown to Times Square to visit one more store to spend money in Colony Records - some great collectors items in there - from both music and film culture. I ended up buying a Superman Fleishcher cartoons poster. After that it was back to the hotel, one last photo with [info]swankyfunk before sadly having to say goodbye. Thank you once again for a fab day :D

^ I didn't win the Oscars sweepstake :( But guessed best Director, Best Editing, Best Actress correctly amongst others. Go Brits! We did well this year :D And those of you who read Edgar or Simon's blogs will know that the editor who one the Oscar for Editing Slumdog Millionaire, also edited Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and more recently Free Agents. As I said, yay for British talent! :)
Big Train

And finally Jockeys! )

Now for a proper filming location. This is the pub in which the interiors for The Crown @ Sandford were shot for Hot Fuzz. This *is* all to scale :P Well worth a visit - the food is fantastic.

What you thinking?... I dunno, Pub? )

You can see some great comparison shots by [info]redderz here :)

Photos taken last week at Bekonscot Model Village, Beaconsfield.
This is *not* a Hot Fuzz filming location but the pub we went to in the same town later that day is. (see next journal post) but this trip was inspired by the inclusion of an action fight scene in the movie that takes place in a model village so cue lots of references to the movie in the photos below. That and the comedy sketch show Big Train which I've tried to explain with clips where I can find - just because its an excuse to do so :P

I'm taking you to the police station. Where is it? )

I didn't have time yesterday to post my photo a day so I cheated and back dated by photo to yesterday - if you missed it here it is. The reason? Spent most of the day in Beaconsfield for a Hot Fuzz theme meet up with [info]missy_manic, Rach, Lorraine, [info]redderz and [info]fearcat. We went to the pub where the interior shots were filmed and to a model village. Not a filming location but appropriate if only for the line Want to be a big cop in a small town? F*ck off down the model village! and Angel's fight with Skinner in one It's not your village anymore!. You can see some photos from [info]redderz already over at [info]sandfordpolice in this post.

Apologies to anyone who might be reading this but has never seen the movie. The above will not make any sense!

Today was spent recovering. To say I over ate at the pub meal is an understatement and I've accomplished nothing today. My room is a mess, and I've tons of laundry to do. I'll post photos when I've time to upload them. I did watch Being Human tonight. Is it me or is the show getting darker and darker?

thanks to [info]fearcat, [info]cglass81 and [info]babettew54 and any others I may have missed for posting birthday wishes yesterday. I had a great day.

Am looking forward to a trip to the pub for a Hot Fuzz themed day tomorrow with Rach, Lorraine, [info]fearcat, [info]redderz, [info]missy_manic tomorrow.

On a completely different note, pics at [info]spacey_daily of Kevin Spacey's latest movie Shrink - looks good and perfectly illustrates the effect of wine at the end of a long day :P

Exclusive Video Interview: Brandon Routh talks SCOTT PLIGRIM and DYLAN DOG

^ *thank you* Frosty @ Collider. You've asked the exact kind of questions I'd be curious to know the answer to and now I know that Brandon 'Superman' Routh:

- prefers Shaun of the Dead to Hot Fuzz.
- is a Spaced junkie.

I am so excited that he's gonna be working with Edgar Wright :D :D :D

Also glad that finally the Dylan Dog project is moving forward - I bought the Italian comic when I was in Rome, can't understand it all though! Does anyone know if there are English translation publications out? Haven't found any on a search. I bet there will be when the movie is released.
