So today was Stephen Gately's funeral. I've not seen any of the news coverage apart from some photos on the front pages of the tabloids. I hope it gave family and friends some closure. The Daily Mail should be ashamed - its made ma ashamed. I'm reluctant to link this because it deserves no publicity but this piece of homophobic journalism from the newspaper discussing Gately's death just makes me ashamed and sad, and angry that something like this would be published in 2009. It has apparently provoked a great number of complaints to the PPC which does help restore my faith in much of the British public's own attitude towards homosexuality. And thank you Charlie Brooker for shredding the journo to bits as is deserved with this article. What did Stephen ever do to you Jan Moir?! Gately's death last weekend threw me slightly because I was already trying *not* to get sad at the fact that last weekend also marked 5 years since the death of Christopher Reeve. So when I saw the Superman "S" tattoo that the remaining members of Boyzone have got in memory of Stephen, I couldn't help but think of Reeve again. :( There's a time to remember, and a time to move on... I've said all I will say on Gately - as a Boyzone fan I will miss his music and Reeve is never far from my mind as an inspiration :)
NO NO NO. 2009 - STOP TAKING AWAY GIFTED ENTERTAINERS. Horrible news this morning that Stephen Gately has passed away suddenly whilst on holiday. Far too young at just age 33. I only saw him in concert with the rest of Boyzone in May. :( So sad.
My favourite of his singing:

Had an awesome lie in today. Weather is crappy so I don't feel like I wasted it. But woah, it's taken me two hours to catch up with f-list since I've not had time to read much of it this week . Hopefully I'm all commented out now.
Anyway been meaning to post these even though I know no one will comment as I don't think anyone else here is a fan. For my own reference I gives you....
( Boyzone, Wembley Arena May 29th 2009 )
^ I thought this tour was even better than last years. Better stage design, better performance, they wholeheartedly admit that they aspire to match Take That. After all that is how they were created back in the 90s as Ireland's answer to Take That. The biggest difference however - aside from TT having a much broader fan audience (at least since their comeback they have) - is that Boyzone do not have a writer within their rank. It's very hard to compete with the hit factory that is Gary Barlow. Boyzone are working on a new album - if that is successful - they will be able to tour again. I really hope it is but they are gonna have to find a Barlow equivalent to work with them on the songs.
Talking of TT, they just started their UK tour last night - I'm torn between wanting to know what the reviews are like and finding out too much before I see it myself in July.
ETA: meant to post, Michael Jackson and/or Boyzone fans watch this. I can't decide if the dancing displayed here is sexy or just plain hysterical (wait for it about 37 secs in) - you decide...

- 12:13 off to Boyzone gig tonight for cheesy fun time - your all jealous really I know it :P #
Just caught up on posting last 3 days of photo a day. Been feeling very lethargic despite the sunny weather. That usually cheers me up but felt very meh yesterday/this morning. Hopefully out of my slump now. I only have two days at work next week = win. So hopefully that will sort me out. Going to Hampstead Heath with Rach tomorrow if weather is good and also to see Star Trek on IMAX with
missy_manic. And on Thursday Lorraine will be coming over for partying and Boyzone gig so lots to look forward to. :) I really need to sort out my summer and book some time off.
Ideas anyone? (within the UK please)

So I've bought tickets to go and see Boyzone tour again next year (Yes, I know... shut up :P )
and today was looking at the track listing of the news songs on the new album and this has to be the most random fandom cross over, sort of. Boyzone have covered a song that originally featured in the Simon Pegg movie Run Fat Boy Run. Tom Baxter's 'Better' It will be the next single that Boyzone release.

Boyzone were just on the Sunday Night Project. I know its not cool but they will always make me think of teenage years and school. Some of my favourite non-single releases. Arms of Mary great cover, should've been a single, give it a listen:
As for even cheesier stuff I always liked Paradise:
as well as, And I:
And now I will crawl back into my hole. No one will comment on this post I'm sure *sigh* They can't all be as cool and talented as Take That y'know.

Our seats were on the upper level at the back, so there's no decent pics of the stage. Great view of the all the stage lighting effects from up there and the sound quality at the 02 is superb.
( Boyzone @ The 02 Arena - 30th May )
The next time I will be at the 02 will be in December to see Coldplay - yay!

So the Boyzone gig on Friday was a heck of a lot of fun. The group clearly were inspired by TT's comeback and am pleased to say they didn't embaress. This gig had much more energy than the one I went to back in 1997! The singing was much improved too. It's clear they've taken it seriously. I was sending updates to Twitter throughout which for some reason hasn't posted here, so have copy/pasted it (timeline is backwards):

The dancing on treadmills was hilariously OTT. There best moment had to be what was a brilliant Michael Jackson melody that the crowd loved, myself included. If I had any criticisms it would be not the performances but the stage production. Boyzone had a 'b' stage that went over the crowd to the middle of the arena but it was used for just one song, I thought that was a real shame. Why not utilise it more? And give those people near the back more to see for longer.
One thing I love about TT that I hoped Boyzone might do is that they put the lights on the crowd when they are encouraging them to sing along. It allows you to feel part of the show and see others singing too! There were lots of times the crowd at the Boyzone concert were singing but at no point did the lights go on us. Also TT have 4 big screens in which all 4 members from different cameras are recorded. Boyzone had two but it meant those of us at the back of the arena could only see the show from one camera angle. Tiny things like that I think can make a massive difference to how you perceive a performance and enjoy the gig. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it, I did - the crowd around us were great fun and that always helps :) Photos are in the next post.

Ok, so this is so not cool but I don't care. 10 years ago I saw Boyzone in concert. And in 4 days time I get to see them again. Yay! It will be a great trip down nostalgia lane. Been listening to the By Request album to remind myself of the songs (though most of 'em I still remember).
Here's one that never got a UK release so far as I can remember. Early, early Boyzone, very early Take That (same music producer!) and proof that at one point Boyzone danced ;)
Something tells me they won't be singing this on the tour. Shame, I'd love it if they did - pure cheese :D
And here's Gately and Keating working the eye contact with the camera for my favourite early release that was a hit in the UK. Also, one of their more interesting music vids IMO. It's Key To My Life:
