Also on impulse I bought A3 sized black card thinking I could stick a collage together of my extra Superman Returns trading cards that I have to make a collage. Whether I get round to doing this I don't know. I'm not the most artistic of types but can't think what else to do with them.... In the same shop (WHSmith) I noticed that volume 4 The Boys graphic novel is out. Must get that. Not sure if WHSmith should be placing that comic next to the likes of G.I. Joe movie graphic novel. Do they even check the comic book content before placing on the shelf? I suspect not. It's not a comic to buy kids for Christmas people! Unless you want to give them an education on adult content...
Talking of which I was not offended but I was definitely shocked at just how close to the knuckle George Takei's comments are when watching William Shatner's Roast. It's the nature of the show to insult but o_0 ! NSFW at all. Shatner and Nimoy on the telephone though = love.
Also *waves* to all new friends from Star Trek friending meme.

^ Just finished reading this. A very interesting read about motherhood that does not come naturally. It's tough going at first because the narrator is so down on herself and her life but worth sticking through for some interesting debate about family upbringing, relationships and the sad phenomenon of high school shootings.

I'm thinking of buying some books in the 3 for 2 offer currently at Borders on American literature.
So from this selection - what would people on my f-list recommend? Suggestions are welcome :)
Note: I've already read and/or studied the following:
Roots by Alex Haley
Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin
Plot Against America by Philip Roth
Autobiography of Malcolm X
King of the World by David Remnick
Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon
Motel Life by Willy Vlautin
The Yellow Wallpaper and Selected Writings by Charlotte Perkins
... so am not looking to buy the above. But there's plenty of others on the list on the link. Which should I get?

If you get a chance to read this book do so. It normally takes me weeks to finish a book. I finished this in seven days. A great piece of fiction that feels totally real, heartbreaking, and heartwarming.
Favourite quotes:
Children aren't coloring books. You don't get to fill them with your favorite colors.
For you, a thousand times over.
And no I have not seen the movie. I would like to though.
Am now reading the graphic novel I picked up last week The Boys - Vol 3 - darkly hilarious so far. I like how its picking up some character arcs/stories from Vol 1.
Oh Catherine Tate on The Sunday Night Project last night on TV - fab :) I wonder what her next project[s] will be? I was pleased she said she would happily return to her comic character creations for Comic Relief :) And er last week - a new character on the last season of the show - wasn't expecting that. And if they make Morris depressed - that will be too upsetting. Please don't :(
Not related to the photo but the biggest thing about today:

Manga Shakespeare - Hamlet. Yes, it is exactly what the title suggests :) I recently finished reading this in preparation for seeing the RSC production. I wish they'd had these when I was studying Shakespeare for my GCSE's. It's true to the text but seeing it drawn as manga makes it all the more fun for someone like me who likes visuals and reading comics.

Borrowed this off my flatmate Rach and really enjoyed reading it. Felt I learnt about a life so very different from my own but still its a human story and so that is what makes the reader relate. Is it wrong that the fact that it was in comic book form meant I read about a subject I probably never would've done in novel form?
Spent much of today catching up on Smallville repeats on Channel 4. I watched the episode directed by Michael Rosenbaum, but sad to say I found plot wise it was only average - another meteor freak episode but at least we saw a bit of evil Lex and I did like the decision to end the episode with a close up on Lex's eyes looking directly into the camera :) The following episode was the wedding of Lex and Lana. I did enjoy the different vantage points style of this episode and regardless of my misgivings about the way characters have been written, this was an enjoyable episode. As usual, I particularly loved the Luthors. Lional's "Welcome to the family" line to Lana was the scariest line in a long while. It seems appropriate for Lex to have blood on his hands the day he gets married. I can't wait to see him go to the dark side even more. Once that's done, this show will be boring unless the writers turn Clark into a Clark I recognise from Superman mythology.
Plus I also finished reading The Last Days of Krypton by Kevin J Anderson. I enjoyed this *a lot* :D I actually didn't want to finish the novel. Every Superman fan knows the fate of Krypton so for this author to make me read all the way through to an ending you already know has to get keep your attention. And he did. There's some nice dialogue references to other media - something for every fan regardless of which Superman medium is your favourite. Buy it. :)

It's actually pretty rare for me to finish reading a book - but today I did! Posting about it because I'd recommend it as truthful and tender read. It's called Motel Life by Willy Vlautin. It's in a similar vein to Steinbeck about people who just have bad luck but keep on going with life. More about it HERE.
Next I will read the novelisation of the Spider-Man 3 movie as recommended by
htbthomas, or someone who commented on the review @ that LJ, can't remember now!
Will have to record Dr. Who as I'll be on a bus into town to get to the cinema when it's on. Nobody post spoiliers till I've seen it! :P
