Saw this @ the bfi with fellow
londongqmfs. Was great :D Oh, and rather ramdom but who was sat being myself and
missy_manic for the screening - David Wailliams (one half of Little Britain) . I applaud his taste :) This was great on the big screen. I have a memory of seeing this as a child on TV - my first introduction to Star Trek that I can remember and being upset by the ending! I think it was one of the first films of my childhood I watched that did not have a Hollywood-type ending of everything is alright at the end. Ok, ok so the lingering last shot of Spock's coffin on a planet that creates life suggests its not the end of Spock - but that was far to subtle a clue for my seven year old brain to understand. ;) Now I love it for its themes of growing old, friendship, life, and death. It so much better than the first movie. And without it we'd never have III and IV which are probably my favourites. I can never decide.
Favourite quote: Spock: If I may be so bold, it was a mistake for you to accept promotion. Commanding a starship is your first, best destiny; anything else is a waste of material.
Kirk: I would not presume to debate you.
Spock: That is wise. Were I to invoke logic, however, logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
Kirk: Or the one.
Spock: You are my superior officer. You are also my friend. I have been and always shall be yours.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Trailer:
Met some lovely people from
ontd_startrek for a meet up on Saturday to watch an original cinema print of Star Trek: The Motion Picture @ bfi. Fun times chatting, playing with action figures and then going to see the film - for me for the first time. This has been called Star Trek: The Motionless Picture by fans and so I wasn't sure what to expect. And LOL good god man some of the shots go on forever! Too much 2001 Space Odyssey influence? On the other hand in the context of its original release seeing the enterprise ship jump from a small tv screen to the cinema screen must have been an exciting thing. The best bits were of course Spock/Kirk/McCoy moments and I do like that in the same way as Star Trek IV -this movie does not have a 'typical villian' for want of a better expression. Next month the bfi are showing Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. I shall be there :)

Tonight I have officially finished watching every single episode of Star Trek TOS. So much fun. Looking forward to meet up tomorrow @ bfi for Star Trek: The Motion Picture - then I will have also completed viewing all Star Trek movies (original cast).
And damn you Edgar Wright, if anyone could sell me horror (I'm not really a big fan) it's probably Wright and his enthusiasm for it. Stop planning Prince Charles Cinema screenings on days I cannot make :( (Ok so I made it to Grindhouse, but was gutted to miss Hot Fuzz).
Oh, and the reviews for Inherit the Wind at the Old Vic are mostly positive - I cannot wait :D Hurry up November. I've missed seeing Spacey on stage.

So the Torchwood screening was great. I really liked the first part so am hopeful for the 5 parter. Had a sense of realism but still with the tongue in cheek humour. I think it might benefit from a continuing storyline rather than new stories each ep. We shall see. Russell T, Eve Myles, and John Barrowman were very entertaining in the Q&A which had a relaxed vibe. The director also had some interesting insights and has been involved from the early stages with Russell T which is rare for a director. All in all, looking forward to watching all of it on TV. A fan at the Q&A asked if there would ever be a musical episode of Torchwood - Russell's reply, "If only we had someone who could sing." I think Barrowman laughed the hardest at the joke ;) (the answer btw is no - Barrowman not sold on the idea - but he did say he liked the musical ep of Scrubs - he's not seen the Buffy one).
Take That gave a fab live performance of Said It All on Jonathan Ross. And looked very beautiful. Can't wait to see the tour. Someone on my flist (sorry can't remember who) said they missed it on their twitter so here it is:
And lord help me but watched more Star Trek TOS this weekend - I LOVE IT (sorry
redderz you must be groaning reading this - I remember you saying you hated it!) Shatner and Nimoy = win. Seriously. So much comedy, and slashy moments. Am looking forward to watching the movie again with a gang from
ontd_startrek on Tuesday.

Just caught up on posting last 3 days of photo a day. Been feeling very lethargic despite the sunny weather. That usually cheers me up but felt very meh yesterday/this morning. Hopefully out of my slump now. I only have two days at work next week = win. So hopefully that will sort me out. Going to Hampstead Heath with Rach tomorrow if weather is good and also to see Star Trek on IMAX with
missy_manic. And on Thursday Lorraine will be coming over for partying and Boyzone gig so lots to look forward to. :) I really need to sort out my summer and book some time off.

- 00:05 back from screening + Q&A @ bfi of The Quatermass Experiment (2005) which was a live BBC TV broadcast starring David Tennant + Mark Gatiss. #
^ Awesome random fact about the above show for Tennant fans = according to Wikipedia as found by
It was during the rehearsals for The Quatermass Experiment that David Tennant was offered the role of the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who. This casting was not announced to the public until later in April, but his fellow castmembers, and crew, became aware of the speculation surrounding Tennant; in the live broadcast Jason Flemyng changed Quatermass's first line to Tennant's Dr Briscoe from "Good to have you back Gordon" to "Good to have you back Doctor" as a deliberate reference.

Had a nice afternoon on the Southbank with friends from work this afternoon. First at the bfi for a coffee, then to the Tate Modern, and then back to the bfi for another quick drink before heading back.
Who else watched Take That Come To Town? :P Possibly too many dancers/acts for such a small stage but TT gave a good performance I think :) I LOL'd at Mark's story about his son. I *still* don't have the album I ordered on Monday yet *sigh*
Also, the episode of The I.T. Crowd that I saw being filmed with
missy_manic aired on Friday:
^ much funnier in context with the rest of the episode :)

Been offline for a few days? what have I missed?
Am just dumping photos from my weekend in Rome. Had a fab time. Hotel was a-mazing. And I didn't have to pay a thing - yay for competition wins! Only spanner in the works was on our last day the entire transport network in Rome - the metro, the trains, the buses all went on strike so we had to stay central. Annoyed us because we'd planned to take a visit to Cinecittà Studios where numerous Oscar nominated movies have been shot, and of course the 'spaghetti' westerns. Oh and Doctor Who ;) Never made it though thanks to the strike. Never mind. Still had a great time :)
( Random Rome - Me, The Doctor, Graffiti etc )

^ I has coffee. good coffee.
( The Vatican, The Collisieum, The Trevi Fountain, The Spanish Steps )
Stuff I bought - Italian comics:
Dylan Dog (to be made into a film Dead of Night next year by Hollywood, starring Brandon Routh)
Danger Diabolik! (Already made into film - saw a bit of it on my bfi course)
^ could be a fun way to get more familiar with the Italian language.

I was gutted that I wasn't able to get tickets for the opening film of this year's London Film Festival Frost/Nixon but I did manage to get tickets for tonight's European Premiere of Oliver Stone's W. which made up for it :) The director and the cast were in attendance so it was a red carpet event - that was exciting :D
I enjoyed the film. Totally topical given the upcoming US elections which will see Bush leave the White House. I was curious to see if Stone's movie would take an anti-Bush view. I don't think it did. I believe It was a attempt to try to show why/how Bush came to power and the reasons behind his choices. Some people may see this as an anti- war movie. And there are some darkly funny moments. I think Stone pieced together what is (currently at least) in the public eye regards the decisions behind invading Iraq and how it was/is 'justified'. I also got from this movie is a better understanding of Bush and his religious stance though it scares me completely when anyone thinks or says they are acting on God's will. This movie totally focused on Bush's foreign policy which I guess from a historical context most politicians are judged on. I was wondering if the movie would cover the events of hurricane Katrina but it did not. I'll have to look elsewhere for that. I am right that Spike Lee did a documentary?

Superman II on the big screen was awesome btw. A different experience to watching Superman The Movie - the version screened was the DVD version, but for Superman II it was an original cinema print. Kinda retro fun to see the old style BBFC certificate at the begining of the movie and the grainier picture quality. By no means did it detract from the experience, I noticed lots of different things - including an absolutely ridiculous cut and re-dub of a line from Lex Luthor. Am gonna write up all my thoughts that I've written down as bullet points at some point.
