Torchwood, Trek, Take That

Take That
So the Torchwood screening was great. I really liked the first part so am hopeful for the 5 parter. Had a sense of realism but still with the tongue in cheek humour. I think it might benefit from a continuing storyline rather than new stories each ep. We shall see. Russell T, Eve Myles, and John Barrowman were very entertaining in the Q&A which had a relaxed vibe. The director also had some interesting insights and has been involved from the early stages with Russell T which is rare for a director. All in all, looking forward to watching all of it on TV. A fan at the Q&A asked if there would ever be a musical episode of Torchwood - Russell's reply, "If only we had someone who could sing." I think Barrowman laughed the hardest at the joke ;) (the answer btw is no - Barrowman not sold on the idea - but he did say he liked the musical ep of Scrubs - he's not seen the Buffy one).

Take That gave a fab live performance of Said It All on Jonathan Ross. And looked very beautiful. Can't wait to see the tour. Someone on my flist (sorry can't remember who) said they missed it on their twitter so here it is:

And lord help me but watched more Star Trek TOS this weekend - I LOVE IT (sorry [info]redderz you must be groaning reading this - I remember you saying you hated it!) Shatner and Nimoy = win. Seriously. So much comedy, and slashy moments. Am looking forward to watching the movie again with a gang from [info]ontd_startrek on Tuesday.

Just caught up on posting last 3 days of photo a day. Been feeling very lethargic despite the sunny weather. That usually cheers me up but felt very meh yesterday/this morning. Hopefully out of my slump now. I only have two days at work next week = win. So hopefully that will sort me out. Going to Hampstead Heath with Rach tomorrow if weather is good and also to see Star Trek on IMAX with [info]missy_manic. And on Thursday Lorraine will be coming over for partying and Boyzone gig so lots to look forward to. :) I really need to sort out my summer and book some time off.

Ideas anyone? (within the UK please)

^ Awesome random fact about the above show for Tennant fans = according to Wikipedia as found by [info]missy_manic:

It was during the rehearsals for The Quatermass Experiment that David Tennant was offered the role of the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who. This casting was not announced to the public until later in April, but his fellow castmembers, and crew, became aware of the speculation surrounding Tennant; in the live broadcast Jason Flemyng changed Quatermass's first line to Tennant's Dr Briscoe from "Good to have you back Gordon" to "Good to have you back Doctor" as a deliberate reference.

Had a nice afternoon on the Southbank with friends from work this afternoon. First at the bfi for a coffee, then to the Tate Modern, and then back to the bfi for another quick drink before heading back.

Who else watched Take That Come To Town? :P Possibly too many dancers/acts for such a small stage but TT gave a good performance I think :) I LOL'd at Mark's story about his son. I *still* don't have the album I ordered on Monday yet *sigh*

Also, the episode of The I.T. Crowd that I saw being filmed with [info]missy_manic aired on Friday:

^ much funnier in context with the rest of the episode :)

Been offline for a few days? what have I missed?

Am just dumping photos from my weekend in Rome. Had a fab time. Hotel was a-mazing. And I didn't have to pay a thing - yay for competition wins! Only spanner in the works was on our last day the entire transport network in Rome - the metro, the trains, the buses all went on strike so we had to stay central. Annoyed us because we'd planned to take a visit to Cinecittà Studios where numerous Oscar nominated movies have been shot, and of course the 'spaghetti' westerns. Oh and Doctor Who ;) Never made it though thanks to the strike. Never mind. Still had a great time :)

Stuff I bought - Italian comics:

Dylan Dog (to be made into a film Dead of Night next year by Hollywood, starring Brandon Routh)
Danger Diabolik! (Already made into film - saw a bit of it on my bfi course)

^ could be a fun way to get more familiar with the Italian language.

I was gutted that I wasn't able to get tickets for the opening film of this year's London Film Festival Frost/Nixon but I did manage to get tickets for tonight's European Premiere of Oliver Stone's W. which made up for it :) The director and the cast were in attendance so it was a red carpet event - that was exciting :D

I enjoyed the film. Totally topical given the upcoming US elections which will see Bush leave the White House. I was curious to see if Stone's movie would take an anti-Bush view. I don't think it did. I believe It was a attempt to try to show why/how Bush came to power and the reasons behind his choices. Some people may see this as an anti- war movie. And there are some darkly funny moments. I think Stone pieced together what is (currently at least) in the public eye regards the decisions behind invading Iraq and how it was/is 'justified'. I also got from this movie is a better understanding of Bush and his religious stance though it scares me completely when anyone thinks or says they are acting on God's will. This movie totally focused on Bush's foreign policy which I guess from a historical context most politicians are judged on. I was wondering if the movie would cover the events of hurricane Katrina but it did not. I'll have to look elsewhere for that. I am right that Spike Lee did a documentary?

*finally* got see The Dark Knight on bfi IMAX last night. The skyline shots are just even more stunning on the bigger screen.

Also, [info]redderz and [info]fearcat - your right there *are* Hot Fuzz lines of dialogue. This time I spotted Harvey Dent saying "Not exactly." And, Gotham Police, "That's what I'm talkin' about." ;)

  • Type up notes from bfi course.
  • Watch Dean Learner Presents...

General, would you care to step outside?

Superman II on the big screen was awesome btw. A different experience to watching Superman The Movie - the version screened was the DVD version, but for Superman II it was an original cinema print. Kinda retro fun to see the old style BBFC certificate at the begining of the movie and the grainier picture quality. By no means did it detract from the experience, I noticed lots of different things - including an absolutely ridiculous cut and re-dub of a line from Lex Luthor. Am gonna write up all my thoughts that I've written down as bullet points at some point.

Oh I could kiss the BFI @ the Southbank. They have already provided me with the fab memories of attending a screening of Spaced series 1 and 2 with a cast Q&A. And next month they are launching Superheroes season and...

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER I WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE ON THE BIG SCREEN!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

Excited? Heck yes! I've always wanted to see it on a cinema screen :D This almost makes up for being uable to attend the Superman Festival Metropolis, Ilinois this year where I'd of got to meet Superman Homepage staff members. Still sad to be missing that :( I'll be emailing the details of the screening to the Homepage today so the details will be up on the site.

Andrew Collin's who hosted the Spaced On Stage Q&A has posted about it on his blog HERE. Nice that he says it was a labour of love. He did a great job too :)

Went back to the BFI on Monday with [info]missy_manic, saw screening of an episode Chris Norris' Brass Eye - the controversial episode about paedophiles and mocking the medias coverage in the late 90s. It still bites. It was followed by a screening of Jam and Jaaaaam which I'd never seen before but was curious knowing that it included performances by Mark Heap (Big Train, Spaced, Green Wing) and Kevin Eldon (Big Train, Hyperdrive, Hot Fuzz). Man that show is dark! really dark humour, and some it plain weird. Julia Davies also one of the cast. And yesterday, went to a BBC Radio 4 recording of Miranda Heart's House Party Was looking forward to it since I've enjoyed Miranda's performances in Not Going Out and Hyperdrive. And it was great fun. :)

Spaced on Stage @ BFI - Sat. 10 November 2007

What can I say? It was superb :) Such a feel good atmosphere - which is a credit to Simon, Jess and Edgar as watching Spaced does exactly that for me. Aida was a lovely surprise. I knew about Jess beforehand being uable to make it so was prepped for that but her video message was funny and, well quite lovely - calling us weirdos in the nicest possible way. Simon reading a text message from 'Tyres' was fab too. The Q&A was a highlight - and *fangirl rambling warning* - Simon's sincerity and love for the characters he created with Jess was obvious in the way he talked about it in the Q&A - that was charming. I was a fan, that made me a bigger fan - I swear I melted in my seat when he was discussing what he wanted to happen to Tim and Daisy and it made me realise more how the whole "McSpaced" fiasco must hurt on a personal level. I hope the powers that be in LA heard our boos!

But actually the best thing - just spending an entire day with other fans was lovely - I actually bumped into someone I knew from another fandom entirely who I did not know was going to be there! Goes to show Spaced really did find its audience (and still is I hope) as Jess said in her message. And Spaced looks fab on a big screen! It was fun watching the broadcast channel 4 transmissions again complete with ad breaks rather than DVD. And hearing others laugh at things you've been laughing at at home watching the DVD - just a lovely experience. I hope Edgar and the cast enjoyed the audience reactions too. For the screening of series 2 Edgar and mum were actually sat on the same row as myself and [info]missy_manic but I didn't want to bother him - besides Spaced was on!

Anyway onto the bit that everyone wants, photos! - under the cut as image heavy!

All photo's are credit to [info]missy_manic - big thanks! And please ask her first if you want to post these elsewhere.

\O/ eeyy! thanks to joining the bfi well in advance myself and [info]missy_manic have got tickets to the Spaced on Stage event. *excited* [info]redderz - it sucks you were unlucky :( I was looking forward to meeting up again- oh well we can always do that anyway!

Is there anyone else on my f-list who got lucky also, and has tickets to go? [info]justtracy I read your post about it - eeyyy! Would be great to meet up on the day. :)

Any Spaced fans reading this who have questions for Simon, Edgar or Jess (am not sure if Nick is doing the Q&A bit? I hope so though) comment on this post with it and I'll do my best to ask on the day given the chance.

Here's one of my fav extra's from the DVD to get in the mood:
