Ashes to Ashes

Spandau Ballet
Caught up with the last 3 eps in time to watch the final ep of series 2 tonight. I think this series has been stronger than series 1. I can't help but think of Hot Fuzz sometimes - especially - the ep with the Neighborhood Watch Alliance - Gene Hunt's advice!! Genius. Also, Alex's correction of police woman to police officer being a woman has nothing to do with it.

I was surprised to hear Glennister announce on BBC News this morning that there will be a third series of Ashes to Ashes - glad though that we will see more of Gene Hunt - I think the writers have tried to keep the character moving forward so look forward to finding out more in series 3 - I know there are a lot of theories out there already about who he is.

Also I meant to post that the final episode of er - made me happy - it was brilliant and not sentimental one bit. As it should be. I can't quite believe it has finally finished.

OMG er GO ARCHIE! also full of cute with the kids. I can't believe next week will be the last ever episode after 15 years :( It is time to go though I do believe that. But there are so many great characters to have come from this show. I will miss it.

And Ashes to Ashes this week was good with the funny but less on the plot development - ok so we have a name Martin Summers to explain the roses and messages but nothing really progressed... hopefully it will in the next episode.

Ashes to Ashes this week - was not expecting that ending with the Mac story line. Nor was I expecting Sam Tyler history not that this was a bad thing at all.

And double bill of er last week with George Clooney's Doug Ross' return. Meh, it was nicely done but it just reminds me that this show is going to end soon :( Best bit was the return of Carter and Benton friendship :) Oh and poor Morris' girlfriend - cop woman can't remember her name - hope we find out what happens to her in the next ep because she got forgotten about to make room for Doug and Carol return!

Quantum Who

Donna, Doctor Who
stolen from [info]doctorwho

In a recent UK poll Doctor Who was named the best sci-fi TV theme tune. Whilst it might be my favourite current sci-fi show, the best theme tune for me was always Quantum Leap. Someone's done a great mash-up of the two:

^ Love it :) Am actually waiting for someone to do this for Ashes to Ashes because every time I hear Alex's dialogue in the credits, I think of the Quantum Leap one.

80s!

Great to have Ashes to Ashes back. The first episode of the second series - much stronger than the first one but I guess now it doesn't have to separate itself so much from Life on Mars - its a very different feel of a show and Gene Hunt is a genius creation :) I had a little giggle when they mentioned Hendon College of Police Training in the episode - couldn't help but think of Hot Fuzz. Oh and the 80s karaoke afterwards on the digital red button option - with the music from the episode - fun!!

I loved the Spandau Ballet Chant No. 1 inspired trailer

=

^ The club is still on Greek Street, London though with a different name - if it played 80s music I'd be there!

Looking forward to seeing Spandau Ballet on Jonathan Ross - first performance as a band for years! (please, please don't let me down - be good!)

According to Ross's twitter today - Simon Pegg will also be a guest = double win :D I wonder if he'll wear the kilt? Spandau wore kilts come to think of it in their first video so hey [info]swankyfunk this one's for you 80s new wave/new romantic band - pretty boys in kilts (well two of them, and ballet shoes!) I must wear my coat like singer Tony Hadley one day, just slung over one shoulder with the gloves attached *snort*:

Yellow, Superman Returns
Been feeling pretty lethargic this weekend but I did go with Rach and [info]missy_manic to Ashes to Ashes club event as posted in [info]a2ashes community. It was fun but I gotta admit after around 11:30pm I didn't recognise much of the music. What I did recognise was great though especially Human League, Duran Duran and of course Spandau Ballet of which I listened to too much of at uni! They played 'Musclebound' when they should have played:

I just loved the singing down a tunnel sound of Tony Hadley on this song :P Anyone else on f-list a Spandau Ballet fan. No? Oh well.

Also, ItsJustSomeRandomGuy is back and season 2 of his genius "Happy Hour" has started on you tube \O/

Just finished watching BAFTA TV Awards, its pants that Life on Mars didn't win :( Oh well at least I could enjoy watching a bearded John Simm and Simon Pegg present awards.

Yellow, Superman Returns
Well am pleased to say, compared to this time last week am feeling better. Have stood my ground at work and although that was tough am all the better for it. But enough of real life stuff. On to fandoms....

This week I have caught up and watched...

The final episode of series two of Torchwood - sad to say the least. *But* am highly confused as to how Captain Jack's brother knew how to control all that modern technology (?) did I miss something or am I just picking?

The final episode of Ashes to Ashes - superb, brilliant twist at the end. I think from the third episode in I enjoyed watching this and stopped comparing it to Life on Mars. A lot of that is to the credit of Philip Glenister who somehow despite playing the 'same' character made it feel different. I look forward to its return.

and tonight series 4 of Doctor Who started - yay!!!! I loved the first episode. How cute were the Adipose? I loved Catherine Tate. I'm sticking up for her. I know some fans are cautious but she's gonna add something different to Martha and Rose. I'm not a big Doctor/Rose shipper as I only really became a fan during the last series - yes, late I know, it was [info]missy_manic who got me watching. But Doctor Who Spoilers ahead ). I'm deaf and so I loved physical comedy so I adored the part where Donna and the Doctor met again. Hilarious.

Talking of funny physical/visual comedy, thanks to a fan on Peggster.net I got a hold of a copy of Edgar Wright's A Fistful of Finger's : D Me and [info]missy_manic watched it after Doctor Who tonight and laughed a lot. I'd seen Dead Right made before this one, and some of the cast members are the same! [info]fearcat and [info]redderz - you have to see this movie. It's filmed in Wells and other areas in Somerset. There are lot of scenes that look suspiciously like Cheddar Gorge! The title of this movie refers to one of the funniest (IMO) scenes in the movie and is absolutely a predecessor to the famous "gunfight" in Spaced.

I missed er and half of Love Soup tonight. But as much as I'm a fan of Tamsin Greig, I miss the male view and counterpart that we had in the first series. :( I am currently watching a documentary on BBC4 on TV producer Verity Lambert. I had no idea her career spanned 50 years. She is responsible for a lot of British TV drama including the first ever series of Doctor Who and more recently Love Soup. Sadly she died last year. R.I.P.

Gaming and TV

Yellow, Superman Returns
Well I've not posted for a day or two. And no I was not on strike. Just been lazy! I now have my Nintendo DS and have been distracted by gaming. It's been ages since I had a games console and its stupidly exciting to have one again. So far I've tried:

Brain Training
Sonic Rush
Draw To Life
- a lot of fun but really p*ssed* because it crashes halfway through the latest level that I've reached. Has anyone else got this game and had issues?

Also, TV wise, why was there no er this thursday? *pouts* I have still to watch Torchwood - don't spoil me! Ashes to Ashes - again, fun episode. All the 90s boyband references was very funny! New Kids on the Block - good name for a boyband. What? Right, East 17 is where they're located... etc. That's my kind of crap taste in music. That and 80s! ;) Also [info]justtracy I'm with you, I'm not a massive Alex/Gene shipper either - its just too predictable. I don't really care either way if they get together or not.

Big Train
So, last night I finally watched Dead Man's Shoes which I've been meaning to watch for a while. I enjoyed it, especially the dark humor but having just read my f-list I don't think I had nearly as much fun watching it as [info]redderz and [info]fearcat ;)

I haven't posted anything on TV viewings this week but pleased to say yay for Torchwood -I enjoyed it again. A funny episode. More like that please rather than depressing dead Owen stories. Ashes to Ashes- another good episode. Oh, and last weekend after watching Big Train before going to see Grindhouse myself and [info]missy_manic suddenly realised that Alex's mum in Ashes to Ashes aka actress Amelia Bulimore was part of the ensemble that made up Big Train. I *knew* I'd seen her before, I just never put the two together. She's in one my favourite sketches about a woman who can't grasp the concept of things to scale:

Also was great to see Sanjeev Bhaskar in Love Soup (still one of the nicest "celebs" I've met) but OMG nooo Love Soup spoiler though does anyone else apart from me watch it?! ) Am waiting to see when Mark Heap comes into, hurry up! :P

And catching up with my f-list, I caved in and clicked the link that [info]gypsyjr posted of a review of the pilot script for McSpaced. I'm quoting bits from the review HERE so if you haven't read it or don't want to know I suggest avoiding the cut (though I'd love to know what other people's reactions are).

Here be McSpaced script debate )

Edgar Wright
Ashes to Ashes & Torchwood )

Talking of Hot Fuzz... I have successfully managed to get tickets to see Edgar Wright presenting Grindhouse at the Prince Charles Cinema in March - yay! I owe it to Quentin for pointing me and my Hot Fuzz tshirt out to Edgar when he spotted me at a Bill Bailey gig. Looking forward to seeing Edgar's fake trailer for Don't as part of the presentation. It's on you tube but will be good to see it where it belongs on a big screen. Half the Hot Fuzz cast are in it! Including Eeeve Draper (what a pair!) ;)
